Brass & Banjo Gumbo

"At home on a festival stage, in a club, on the street, or at the hippest after-party."

Jon McBride and Johann Stein met during a jam session at a Mardi Gras party in Venice Beach in 2002. The magical mix of gumbo, cheap beer, and Neville Brothers tunes that night led to two bands, four CDs, the annual Krewe of Grandview Mardi Gras parade on the Venice boardwalk, and 10+ years filled with countless gigs. Despite now living on different coasts, the musical partnership persists through remote recording projects and gigs in Los Angeles and Vermont as Brass & Banjo Gumbo.

Johann Stein is a native of Thibodaux, Louisiana, a graduate of the University of New Orleans, and a long-time stalwart of Los Angeles' trad jazz and funk music scenes. Through recording and touring with Post Modern Jukebox, and as a founding member of The Gumbo Brothers and The Mudbug Brass Band (with Jon McBride), Johann has established himself as an in-demand tenor banjo (and guitar) player and artful ambassador of New Orleans music and food. Anyone who has witnessed his dynamic performances or tasted his cooking recognizes him as an experienced authority on the sounds and tastes that have endeared the crescent city to the heart of American culture.
